The TSO's of Sweden, Svenska Kraftnät and Lithuania, LITGRID turtas have awarded ABB contracts to supply a new HVDC Light link between the two countries. The transmission rated 700 MW will link together the electricity networks of the three Baltic States with those of the Nordic countries. The purpose is to strengthen security of supply in both the Baltic countries and the southern part of Sweden and also to integrate an emerging joint Baltic electricity market with the Nordic and European markets. The system incorporates special features such as active AC voltage support providing greater network stability and black-start capability providing faster grid restoration after a blackout. The system is designed for integration into a future pan-European grid with the evolution of the DC grid concept, under discussion around the world. The link consists of a 400 km long sea cable route, land cable routes of 40 km on the Swedish side and 10 km on the Lithuanian side, and two HVDC Light converter stations, one in Nybro, Sweden and the other in Klaipeda, Lithuania. The link is scheduled to go into operation in 2015.
